A study was conducted to determine the appropriate surface treatment method for rice husks in order to compare their improved physical properties (tensile strength and elongation) to non- treated rice husk/linear low-density polyethlyene (LLDPE) film. Pulverized rice husk (RH) was treated with NaOH (RH-m), and acetic acid (RH-ac) to prepare a composite film with LLDPE resin. The treated RH showed typical mercerization, and acetylation, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, cross-polarization magic-angle spinning 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The RH-m sample was mercerized, allowing hemicellulose and partial amorphous cellulose decomposition. The RH-ac sample was processed via acetylation, showing partial lignin decomposition. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy showed a smaller gap between the interface of the RH surface for RH-m, and RH-ac compared to untreated RH, implying increased composite compatibility. Particularly, RH-m showed superior tensile strength (23.73 N/mm2) and elongation (982%) compared to other treatment methods. |
