Fabrication of reaction bonded Si3N4-Si2N2O fibers on porous Al2O3 scaffold for gas filtration |

Reaction bonded Si3N4-Si2N2O composites coating were given on porous Al2O3 scaffold fabricated by sponge replica method. The nitridation process produced extensive whiskers and fibers of the Si3N4-Si2N2O system on the surface. The coating process was done by using silicon powder onto the prefabricated Al2O3 porous scaffold which was made by sponge replica method using polyurethane sponge as fugitive replica. For better densification 6% Y2O3 and 2% Al2O3 were added as a sintering additive. Nitridatin process was carried out at 1450 °C temperature. To improve the fiber characteristics a post sintering process, the gas pressure sintering (GPS) was carried out at 1550 °C. The GPS was carried out at nitrogen atmosphere. Materials properties like relative densities, compressive strength were investigated. Detailed microstructural and morphological analysis was perfored by SEM and XRD techniques. |
