Synthesis of the hollow shell structured-ZrO2 and its application for self-humidifying proton exchange fuel cells(PEMFCs) |

Nafion has been known as the polymer with excellent proton conductivity in the presence of water. Self-humidifying PEMFC was studied to overcome this problem. In this study, the electrode was prepared by Pt-C/Pt-H-ZrO2 as dual catalyst electrode for self-humidifying PEMFC. Hollow shell of ZrO2 (H-ZrO2) was synthesized by sol-gel method using SiO2 as a template. H-ZrO2 was confirmed by Brunauer-Emmet-Teller method (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM). BET analysis shows the increase of surface area of H-ZrO2 compared to that of SiO2@ZrO2. Successfully prepared H-ZrO2 exhibits high water uptake. The cell test was conducted under various relative humidity (RH). The dual catalyst electrode comprised by H-ZrO2 and Pt-C shows a possible route for self-humidifying PEMFC. |
