Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether sulfone) Based Semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Network Membranes Containing Cross-Linked Poly(vinyl phosphoric acid) Chains for High Temperature and Low Humidity Fuel Cells |

Semi-IPN membranes based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) were developed for high temperature fuel cells. The membranes were prepared by heating procedures using SPAES solutions containing vinyl phosphoric acid (VPA) and cross-linker. When the membrane was prepared using the optimized molar ratio of VPA to cross-linker, it showed a high proton conductivity up to 10 mS cm-1 at 120 oC and 40% RH, and high mechanical properties. Membrane electrode assemblie (MEA) from this semi-IPN membrane showed a peak power density of 180 mW cm-2 at 120 oC and 40% RH, which is much larger than that of the MEA from the SPAES membrane (145 mW cm-2). |
