Ribbon width-dependent electrical transport of graphene nanoribbons |

There has been growing interest in future nanoelectronic devices based on graphene because of its high carrier mobility. While graphene is intrinsically a semi-metal with zero bandgap, graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) exhibit semiconducting properties due to quantum confinement. Patterning the graphene into nanoribbons can open a bandgap which can be tuned by changing the ribbon width. In this study, we use Si nanowires as etch masks to make nanoribbon structure by exposing oxygen plasma to graphene. The ribbon widths of the GNRs were controlled by the diameters of the Si nanowires that were fabricated by a combination of polystyrene nanosphere lithography and metal-assisted electroless etching. The nanowires were aligned on the graphene at the edges of the electrodes by electric-field-assisted assembly, and oxygen plasma was used to remove unprotected graphene. The effects of ribbon widths on the electrical properties of GNRs were investigated. |
