Motivated by experiments on actin filaments and the considerable current interest in polymer networks, we present a statistical mechanical study of stiff polymers. We obtain simple analytical forms for the force-extension relations and compare them with numerical treatment. We note the important role of boundary conditions in determining the force-extension relation. The theoretical predictions presented can be tested against single molecule experiments on neurofilaments and cytoskeletal filaments like actin. We also address the important issues of buckling of such stiff polymers. |
