Poly[2,2’-(m-phenylene)-5,5’-bisbenzimidazole] (PBI) is used to fabricate high performance technical fibers for firefighter’s gear, astronaut space suits, protective gloves, and aircraft wall fabrics, as well as membranes for fuel cells, owing to its high thermal and mechanical stability. In this study, in order to expand the applications of PBI and to improve its physical properties, MWCNT as a reinforcing nanofiller was introduced to PBI fiber. For the purpose, a series of PBI/MWCNT nanocomposite fibers were manufactured via wet-spinning by varying dope solution condition as well as post-treatment. The morphological features, microstructures, electrical resistivity, and thermal stability of the nanocomposite fibers were then investigated by using an OM, SEM, ohmmeter, and TGA, respectively. The structures, mechanical and physical properties of the nanocomposite fibers were analyzed and discussed in terms of the dope solution composition, spinning condition, and heat treatment. |
