Thermal oxidative stabilization (TOS) behaviors of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers with different comonomers, such as itaconic acid, methacrylic acid, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate (VA), were investigated with FT-IR. Similar TOS behaviors of the PAN copolymers with carboxylic acid groups indicated similar ionic initiation activity of the comonomers. Along with certain initial induction period, facilitated TOS behavior of poly(acrylonitrile-co-VA) was observed as confirmed by fast progress of extent of cyclization, concetration of cyclized ring, and extent of oxygen uptake reaction. The behavior likely stemmed from effective in-situ generation of acetic acid through the degradation of vinyl acetate units during the TOS, suggesting the importance of the type of comonomers to control the TOS processes. |
