BCP Loading on PCL/ PLGA Membranes for Improved Mechanical Strength and Osteoblast Cytocompatibility |

Electrospun polycaprolactone and poly (lacto-co-glycolide) (PCL/PLGA) membranes were loaded with biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) powders to facilitate bone-bonding formation. Different concentrations of BCP powder were loaded and successful loading was confirmed by XRD analysis, TEM and SEM visualization. The effect of BCP powder loading on the mechanical strength, contact angle, apatite formation and cytocompatibility was also investigated. It was observed that the tensile strength of the membranes increased with the addition of the BCP powder. Improvement of the hydrophilicity and formation of bone-like apatite was also noted to be correlated with the amount of BCP content. Moreover, proliferation and adhesion of osteoblast-like cells was more apparent upon the addition of the BCP powder as seen in the increasing cell density from MTT assay and micrographs from SEM and confocal microscopy. |
