Black-titania/glass fiber filter: Properties and its application in Solar to Steam |

In this work, using vacuum annealing we introduce oxygen vacancies into TiO2 lattice, which changes natural white color into deep black. Oxygen vacancies present a confined state (defect) in the bandgap, which acts as a light absorption center. Developed black titania (B-TiO2) nanopowders exhibit high (>89%) broadband light absorption throughout entire solar spectrum. According to TEM and SEM analysis, there are no noticeable changes in the surface morphology of B-TiO2 and pristine TiO2, average particle size is 20-40 nm remains unchanged. The optimum deposition amount of B-TiO2 was found via carrying out depositions using various volumes 20, 25, 30 and 40 ml. The magnificent photo-thermal conversion capability of the B-TiO2/GF results in the rapid increase of temperature from 22.5 °C to 90 °C within 2 minutes upon exposure to 1-sun illumination. Finally, due to its evaporation rate of 1.32 - 1.37 kg–m-².h-¹, which is comparable to expensive plasmonic material, B-TiO2 nanoparticles deposited glass fiber is a promising alternative light absorber for Solar to Steam desalination. |
