Theranostic nanoparticles, which integrate imaging and therapeutic functionalities, have played a central role in the improvement of tumor treatment. We aim to develop a theranostic agent based on Mn(Ⅱ) arsenite-complexed MnCO3-mineralized nanoparticles (Mn/As-MnCO3 NPs) that can generate CO2 bubbles and Mn2+ ions for US imaging and T1 Imaging, respectively, and simultaneously release arsenic trioxide (As2O3) for cancer treatment. At physiological pH (7.4), the Mn/As-MnCO3 NPs would not show noticeable US and T1 MR contrast signals. In contrast, at tumoral pH (6.4), they may generate strong echogenic signals due to CO2 bubble generation and T1 signals caused by the release of Mn2+ ions. In addition, at tumoral pH, the Mn/As-MnCO3 NPs would effectively release As2O3 for cancer treatment. This activatable dual contrast agents equipped with drug-releasing property may serve as a novel theranostic nanoparticles for improved diagnosis and therapy of various tumors. |
