Selective production of monomers from lignin depolymerization in water using ZnO-Co@N-CNTs |

In this study, we performed the catalytic depolymerization of Kraft lignin in water using ZnO-Co@N-CNTs catalyst and compared its activity with different catalysts. Almost complete conversion (94.0%) of lignin into alkyl-substituted cyclohexanone and phenolic species with a monomeric yield of 12.1% was achieved at 350 ºC for 6 h reaction. When the temperature was increased to 400 ºC, the monomeric yield was further increased to 24.4%. The major species were phenol and its derivatives. Moreover, a high degree of deoxygenation (72.0%) of lignin was achieved in water by ZnO-Co@N-CNTs at 350 C for 6 h reaction time. A complete comparison with different catalysts was made on the basis of lignin conversion, bio-oil yield, monomeric yield and degree of deoxygenation. The high monomeric yield and a high degree of deoxygenation in water from ZnO-Co@N-CNTs make this catalyst a potential candidate for developing an environment-friendly and cost-effective process for biochemical production. |
