Multifunctional Drug-eluting Beads Capable of X-ray Imaging and pH Neutralization for Effective Transcatheter Chemoembolization |

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the most commonly used interventional procedure to treat inoperable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It treats tumors by administering embolic materials with anticancer drugs to the hepatic artery. Drug-eluting beads (DEBs) have been used in the TACE. However, since the existing DEB has no imaging capability, contrast agents must be used in the procedure, and it is difficult to check the progress after the procedure. Also, the acidic micro-environment induced by the embolization of blood vessels causes recurrence and metastasis. In this study, we developed multifunctional DEBs capable of X-ray imaging and pH neutralization for effective transcatheter chemoembolization. In vitro, X-ray imaging, and pH neutralization experiments were conducted to evaluate the functionality of prepared DEBs. |
