Green Synthesis and Catalytic Properties of Hollow Polystyrene Microparticles Covered with Bimetallic Nanocrystals |

An easy-to-use, green and low-cost method adopting a heterophase polymer dispersion strategy was developed to produce monodisperse hollow microparticles with well-defined nanostructures. When polystyrene(PS) seeds which were prepared by the modified dispersion polymerization were dispersed in an ethanol and water medium at 70ºC, they transformed into hollow PS microparticles as a result of the uptake of continuous phase by the particles. By the consecutive heterophase polymer dispersion processes involving the addition of metal precursors, hollow PS microparticles covered with bimetallic nanocrystals could be obtained, being based on in situ production of metal nanocrystals from metal precursors on the polymer particles. Based on our results, plausible mechanisms for the formation of these hollow microparticles were proposed. The hollow PS microparticles covered with bimetallic nanocrystals exhibited high activity at low concentration and excellent reusability as catalysts. |
