Soot and nitrogen oxides are of recent interests in the air quality of large modern cities. In particular, decrepit diesel vehicles are one of critical emission sources. This work attempted to reduce the fuel consumption by an auxiliary device (Fuel Atomization Device, FAD) and thereby to contribute to the reduction of pollutants. This device utilizes in principle cavitation phenomenon and turbulent flow. It is positioned on the way to the engine room from the fuel tank. The FAD reduced the spraying size in 20 to 30% on particle number basis, and could save approximately 15% of fuel consumption. Tiny droplets, which ranged mostly under 2 μm in SMD (Sauter mean diameter), were converted from the supplying fuel stream through a mechanical mobile device without any energy source and would provide better combustion condition. |
