Biological systems through billions of years of adaptation to the environment have evolved unique structures with efficient sensations and functions. Inspired by the structure and function of biological systems, we show several bio-inspired soft sensors with excellent sensing capabilities and unique functionalities and their applications in wearable devices. Inspired by the fingertip skin, we demonstrate multifunctional electronic skins (e-skins) differentiating various mechanical stimuli (normal, shear, stretching, bending), static and dynamic pressure, vibration, and temperature with high sensitivities. Mimicking biological camouflage skins, we demonstrate transparent nanomembranes for skin-attachable microphones and speakers, and pressure-responsive colorimetric skins with high mechanosensitivity. Finally, mimicking the mechanism of astringency perception on the human tongue, we demonstrate a soft and ion-conducting hydrogel artificial tongue for astringency perception. |
