Dynamics of branched chains using XPCS |

Relaxation times for the surface fluctuations of films of well-defined, anionically polymerized, highly branched polystyrene were measured X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS).A hydrodynamic theory of overdamped capillary waves provided excellent fits to the data using the ratio of viscosity to surface tension as a single adjustable parameter.Combining those experimentally determined ratios with an analysis of the static off-specular scattering that provides surface tension made it possible to obtain viscosities at various temperatures.We found that bulk dynamics are architecture dependent.These revealed trends different from those for bulk viscosity measurement when film viscosities were calculated assuming a continuum model for surface capillary waves applied. |
