Carbon fibers are the stiffest and strongest reinforcing fibers for polymer composites. Made of pure carbon in form of graphite, they have low density and a negative coefficient of longitudinal thermal expansion. Carbon fibers-reinforced composite materials are used to make aircraft and spacecraft parts, car bodies, golf club shafts, fishing rods, sailboat masts, and many other components where light weight and high strength are needed. The future of carbon fiber is very bright, with vast potential in many different industries. In the alternate energy fields and automobile industries, carbon fibers can be applied in wind turbines, compressed natural gas storage and transportation, fuel cells, and high performance automobiles by loosing weight of car bodies. In Korea, the needs of development of carbon fibers in industrial applications are rapidly increased recently, and advanced technologies of carbon fibers must be developed due to the independence of national defense. |
