Molecular weight measurements have been a major problem in the characterization of perfluoropolyether. Such measurements are severely limited by the low solubility of perfluoropolyether in most organic solvents. In this study, we report on convenient gel permeation chromatography (GPC) technique for measuring molecular weight distribution of perfluoropolyether with mono-functional acid fluoride which overcomes many of the inherent limitations of other analytical methods. Column packed 100% polydivinylbenzene (DVB) are used with 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane as mobile phase. Perfluoropolyether with mono-functional acid fluoride is synthesized by the combination of cesium fluoride, tetraglyme, and hexafluoropropylene oxide (HFPO). The detailed experimental results for synthesis of perfluropolyether and molecular weight distribution by GPC will be described. |
