PVC has been widely used in the sheath material for cable. It has good flame retardancy due to it’s high chlorine content but relatively emits quite amount of smoke. To achieve both high performance of plenum rated fame retardancy and smoke suppression, a synergistic interaction of the various flame retardants and smoke suppressants has to be introduced. High loading of flame retardants and suppressants, however, often leads to the poor heat stability, which causes degradation during melt processing or in use. In this study, flame retardant PVC compound for plenum rated unshielded twisted pair(UTP) cable sheath was considered, and the effects of ingredients on the heat stability of compound have been investigated by an experimental design method. Kinds and ratios of plasticizers are found out to be the main effect to the heat stability, and the stabilizer, hydrotalcite in that order. After optimization, the fame retardancy, smoke suppressant performance, and mechanical properties of this new plenum FR-PVC compound show similar behavior compared to the conventional FR-PVC compound, while heat stability time increased double. |
