Organic pigments have attracted much attention because of their photosensitivity, brilliance, color strength and overall stability. To apply organic pigments as electrophoretic particles, the surface of organic pigments was encapsulated with poly(methyl methacrylate) via in-situ dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate with the presence of the organic pigments in this study. Vinyl imidazole was also used as comonomer to enhance the electrophoretic properties. Chemical structure, morphology, and thermal property of the encapsulated pigments were investigated by FT-IR, SEM, and TGA, respectively. Surface charge transfer after coating process was also characterized by measuring zeta potential in the aqueous medium. Electrophoretic response of the modified particles in the low dielectric medium was analyzed using an electrophoresis light scattering measurement. |
