AFM ASSISTED SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF COMPLEX POLYMER NANOSTRUCTURES |

We will present a strategy based on AFM that allows investigating macromolecules as isolated objects. It is applied to the analysis of the multistep synthesis of polymers, presently poly(chloroethyl vinyl ether)-based systems, with complex chain architecture, such as stars, macrocycles, or more sophisticated molecular objects. Magnification of the obtained macromolecules by grafting onto processes allows their AFM imaging as isolated molecular objects as well as performing statistical analysis over a large set of molecules. Through this approach the efficiency of the applied synthesis can be readily evaluated but also the different side processes operating during the synthesis and yielding secondary polymer structures can be identified and their mechanisms of formation determined. This will be highlighted by the presentation of several examples |
