Enhancement of colloidal stability of magnetite nanoparticles for biosynthesis of magnetic bacterial cellulose biocomposite |

Bacterial cellulose(BC) has been interested owing to its superior properties and potential of application in various field. Here, magnetic hybrid BC was synthesized by culturing Gluconacetobacter xylinus in a medium containing magnetite nanoparticles(MNPs). Stable dispersion of MNPs in an aqueous solution is critical in the application due to their severe aggregation. We synthesized a polymeric surfactant of amphiphilic comb-like polymer (CLP) based on methyl methacrylate backbone for the dispersion of MNPs. The hydrophobic backbone of CLP chemophysically attached to the surface of MNPs and released freely the hydrophilic side chains toward the medium in aqueous environment. The colloidal stability of CLP-modified MNPs dispersion solution was measured by optical image and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The morphology of the magnetic BC composite was observed using scanning electron microscopy. Magnetization of magnetic BC was measured by superconducting quantum interference device. |
