Coaxial electrospinning allows the functionalization of polymer fibers by low molar mass liquids, including complex fluids, in the fiber core. We have developed a technique for encapsulating liquid crystals, chiral as well as non-chiral, exhibiting different phases and consequently different properties. These properties, attractive for applications ranging from tunable lasers to energy conversion, are transferred to the composite fiber mat, opening the door for highly interesting functional textiles. Our current main focus is on the development of novel autonomous sensors through the technique. By means of Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling we can dissect the fibers along arbitrary directions, allowing us to characterize the internal structure of the core-sheath fibers with excellent precision and detail. |
