제목 Tetragonal columnar Liquid Crystals in Polypeptides.
초록 Poly(γ-(3-trimehylsilyl)-propyl-L-glutamate) (P3SiLG) and Poly(γ-(3-trimethylsilyl)-methyl-L-glutamate)(P1SiLG) were synthesized by an ester-exchange reaction. P3SiLG formed a thermotropic columnar tetragonal phase. This novel liquid crystalline phase was formed in temperatures ranging from -17℃ to 103℃ and transformed into the well-known cholesteric phase upon heating. P1SiLG and P3siLG were slowly crystallized at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the crystalline polymer show that the crystalline packing of P3SiLG were more regular compared to that of P1SiLG.. The longer spacer groups of P3SiLG reduced the motional restriction from the α-helical main chain. This enabled the trimethylsilyl sidechains in P3SiLG to be packed more regularly compared to those in P1SiLG. The stabilized structure of the tetragonal columnar packing was due to the unique size and shape of the teramethysilyl side chains
