Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a non-radiative through-space energy flow from excited-state donors to ground-state acceptors. Since the FRET is based on the dipole-dipole interaction, it has been reported that the local field around NP surface could strongly alter the donor-acceptor interaction in FRET to enhance or suppress the FRET efficiency. In this study, we utilized PS-PVP micelles to place donor-acceptor pair of fluorescent dyes around Ag NPs on solid substrate. By analyzing the relaxation processes of dye molecules in the absence and presence of Ag NPs, we found that Ag NPs created a new decay channel to the excited donors, which was much faster than FRET channel. As a result, we found that FRET was switched off in the proximity of metal surface. |
