Relationship between polymer structure and gas permeation properties in modified polysulfones with trimethylsilyl side groups |

Modification of polymer structure has been performed in order to improve gas permeation properties and furthermore study relationship between polymer structure and gas permeation properties. Trimethylsilyl (TMS), which was reported to be excellent substituent to increase permeability, was introduced by chemical reaction into phenyl rings of polysulfones such as bisphenol-A polysulfone (PSF), hexafluoro polysulfone (HFPSF), tetramethyl polysulfone (TMPSF). All modified polysulfones showed increase in permeability although TMS groups were asymmetrically substituted on phenylene ring. Loss in perm-selectivity is small compared to increase in permeability but gas permeation properties were improved by substitution of TMS. To characterize their physical properties, glass transition temperature, d-spacing, and density were measured. In order to investigate chain mobility, dynamic mechanical analyser (DMA) and dielectric analyzer (DEA) were also utilized. Ultimately we attempted to find relationship between structure and gas permeation properties. |
