As human life expectancy is increased, the demand of medical implants is also increased. However, the most of the implants are still not free of serious problems such as irritation, inflammation or mal-function caused by the foreign body immune response. These phenomena are known to be caused by biofouling and therefore, we have studied the surface functionalization of medical implants and biosensors to minimize biofouling. Here we present our study of functional surface coatings created by polymer thin films, polyelectrolyte multilayers and/or metal nanoparticle-hybrid films. In this presentation, we will include characterization of the surface functional coating for microfluidic devices and medical implants and cellular interactions on the coated surfaces. |
