Continuous Production of Functionalized Polymer Particles via Phase Separation in Polymer Blend Films |

In this study, a continuous prepartion of spherical or hemispherical polymer particles is reported. It is simply utilizing the phase separation in films of polymer blends during coating process. We took advantage of the strong phase separation between a water soluble crystalline polymer as a matrix and hydrophobic polymers as minor components. The crystallization-induced phase separation led to isolated embedding of the hydrophobic particles in the matrix. Cycles of film casting-drying-matrix washing facilitated continous production of funcational particles. We demonstrate the prepartion of water-soluble or functionalized particles of polystyrene (PS) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) in forms of spheres or hemispheres. The size of the particles could be controlled by adjusting the thickness of the films as well as the ratio of the minor polymer versus the matrix polymer. It provides a general facile way to prepare uniform-sized polymer particles via a simple continous process. |
