Production and characterization of pure, sulfur-coated Ge and Si1-xGex alloy nanoparticles through laser pyrolysis process |

We demonstrate production of three types of germanium nanoparticles (NPs) via laser pyrolysis of germane (GeH4) in combination with silane (SiH4) (for silicon incorporation) and SF6 (as a photosensitized and sulfur precursor). The size, shape, crystalline structure and composition of each NPs were characterized. Use of higher SF6 gas flows led to SF6 decomposition and production of sulfur-coated Ge NPs. The resulting thin sulfur layer on the Ge NPs can be helpful for stabilizing the NPs against oxidation and for carrying out subsequent surface chemistry that may broaden applications of Ge NPs. Si1-xGex alloy NPs were produced using SiH4 and GeH4 precursors at the same time during the laser pyrolysis process, and the NP composition was tuned by varying the GeH4 flow rate. Considering the versatility and high productivity of the laser pyrolysis, this study provides a straightforward pathway to commercial production of novel nanomaterials as high purity dry powders. |
