Thermophilic (53±2oC) H2 production was studied in a continuous trickling biofilter (TBR) system. A commercial support matrix called ‘Saran-Lock’ (void fraction, 0.97) was used as a packing and H2-producing microbial consortia obtained from a continuously stirred tank reactor operated at 55oC as inoculum. Optimal H2 production was observed at pH 5.5, a hydraulic retention time of 16 h, an inlet glucose concentration of 14 g/L, and a recirculation flow rate of 100 mL/min. The maximal H2 yield and volumetric H2 production rate achieved were 1.13 ± 0.12 mol H2/mol glucose and 3.08 ± 0.26 L H2/L·d, respectively. The biogas was mainly composed of H2 (48.0 ± 1.9%) and CO2 (50.7 ± 2.3%), and CH4 was not detected. The major fermentation by-products were butyric acid and acetic acid. This is the first report that a thermophilic TBR system can be used for H2 production.
