Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles containing the phase change materials (PCM) were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization. The polymer nanoparticles prepared with different parameters were investigated in terms of average particle size, particle distribution, and latent heat storage of dodecanol coated with PMMA as PCM. The morphologies and features of PMMA particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and particle size analyzer, respectively. As a result, the diameters of PMMA particles were adjusted with amount of surfactant, hydrophobe, and homogenization condition. And the stable and nano-sized spherical PMMA nanoparticles were obtained by miniemulsion polymerization, which could be attributed to the prevention of Ostwald ripening by hydrophobe. Thermal properties of PMMA nanoparticle containing dodecanol were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From DSC analysis, dodecanol coated with PMMA exhibited the thermal energy storage and release behaviors. It was noted that PMMA particles containing dodecanol showed a good potential as a thermal energy storage medium. |
