Crystallization of hectorite using organic modifiers have been reported, however this is the first attempt to synthesize hectorites using short/long alkyl chain imidazolium cations. Ionic liquids have been known for its higher thermal stability, therefore ideal template for crystallization of hectorite. Synthesis of well crystalline hectorite were carried out using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1,3-didecyl-2-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride as templates at 110 °C for 48 h. XRD peaks at 4.6, 2.6, 1.7, and 1.5 Å were observed for (110,020), (130,200), (150,240,310), and (060,330) reflections of hectorites. Interlayer spacing of hectorite depends on the size of short/long alkyl chain imidazolium cations. Imidazolium cations were arranged into interlayer of hectorite as mono- or bi-layers, which depended on the size of alkyl chain length. SEM images reveal formation of layered structures. |
