Applications of Cu-Sn based ternary alloys for radiation shielding |

Attenuation of gamma ray effectiveness of Cu-Sn based alloy has been investigated experimentally and theoretically in this study. Phase etched Cu-Sn based ternary alloy for radiation shielding was designed and fabricated by induction melting casting. Gamma rays attenuation measurements were carried out at photon energies of 100-1300 KeV and extended wide range of 0.01-13 MeV. The composites would be compared with high purity Pb. Pure Germanium detector has been used for gamma-ray spectroscopy. The elemental compositions of samples were analyzed using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometer. This study indicates the potential of utilizing the light-weight and harmless Cu-Sn based alloy as shielding material replacing current lead used for attenuation of gamma rays and thermal neutrons with additional advantages such as high energy absorption. |
