It is well known that intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is used for cataract surgery. Among various IOLs, acrylic intraocular lenses are one of the most frequently used soft IOLs. It has been found that the acrylic IOLs surfaces are easy to adhere bacteria, silicone oil, and cells, which can cause the high incidence of endophthalmitis, capsular opacification, capsular contraction, IOL decentration, and influence vision acuity. 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) has been studied in many biomedical fields because of good biocompatibility, such as compatibility of blood, inhibiting protein adhesion, antifouling and so on. The aim of this work is to design a hydrophilic, soft acrylic IOL with enhanced biocompatibility by introducing MPC, in which new acrylic IOLs comprising hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties are foldable even in dry state. We fabricated hydrophilic foldable acrylic IOLs based on HEMA and DEGMEMA with acrylic IOL containing 5, 10 and 20 wt% of MPC. |
