Design of a heterobifunctional liquid crystals and their photoreaction |

We prepared a heterobifunctional liquid crystal which has two different polymerizable groups, i.e. acryl and diacetylene groups. Its monomer showed smectic A mesophase in the range of room temperature. In LC state, unidirectional shear force was induced for the better alignment and radical polymerization of acryl groups by 365 nm UV irradiation was carried out to yield a polymer film. In-situ polymerization of 254 nm UV irradiation produced conjugated polyacetylene. We pursued the possibility of patterned images through the in-situ polymerization from liquid crystal monomer and investigated the distinct optical properties derived from the change of alignment. |
