Among various soft magnetic magnetorheological (MR) materials, Carbonyl Iron (CI), a high purity iron micron-sized particle derived from decomposition of Iron Pentacarbonyl, has been extensively used as a magnetize-able particle for the MR fluid due to its soft magnetic property and high magnetic permeability. However, sedimentation of the micron-sized CI particles due to the large density mismatch with the medium oil and difficulties in re-dispersion after caking have been regarded as serious drawbacks. Therefore, considerable efforts such as Polymer-coating technology have been made to prevent CI particles from coming in contact with each other (impede aggregation) and to decrease the CI particles density to improve the sedimentation stability. In this experiment, core-shell structured Carbonyl Iron (CI) particles with polystyrene were fabricated and their morphology, MR properties, and sedimentation stability were studied. |
