As the scarcity of water is becoming one of the main challenges, desalination has been adopted wordwidely to produce fresh water. Membrane distillation (MD) has been regarded as a up and coming desalination technology because of its advantages. However, issues on membrane fouling impedes commercialization of MD. Accordingly, many studies have been conducted to reduce fouling and extend system recovery. The objective of this study, therefore, is to compare effect of various methods for sustainable operation in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. A saturated CaSO4 solution containing humic acid was used as a model feed solution. After fouling experiments physical and chemical cleaning tests were carried out and flux recovery rate was measured to represent the effect of each test. In addition to cleaning experiments, air was injected in the feed line to mitigate formation of fouling on the membrane surface. |
