This study reports a microfluidic approach to fabricate monodisperse gelatin hydrogel microparcticles (GHMPs) for embolization. The conversion of the aqueous gelatin drops to the GHMPs was conducted by injection of glutaraldehyde into the aqueous gelatin drops. We obtained the crosslinked GHMPs in the range of 50-200 μm, while maintaining the particles' monodispersity. The degree of crosslinking of the GHMPs determined the degradation rate. Finally, we have demonstrated that the GHMPs have great potential as a biocompatible, biodegradable and nontoxic embolic material by showing their controlled phase degradation as well as controlled drug release. |
