Trickle beds are the widely used three phases reactor that uses the downward liquid flow and upward gas flow over a packed bed. Due to the complexity of hydrodynamics, mass transfer phenomena, and reaction kinetics, it is a challenge to conduct the mathematical modeling of the trickle bed reactor. Specifically, in this work, the CO2 hydrogenation reaction occurs in a trickle bed reactor for formic acid synthesis. Not only does CO2 dissolve in solution and produce an amine adduct, but also CO2 is reacted with hydrogen in the gas phase. The modeling of the reactor is conducted by MATLAB, and the kinetic information of CO2 hydrogenation is obtained from experimental data. By the evaluation of formic acid production based on the modeling, this work provides insight into the optimal operating condition of the reactor for sustainable formic acid production. |
