In order to achieve enough compatibility between NR and EPDM, the addition of a small amount of the third polymeric component as a compatibilizer was attempted. In this study, we prepared a segmented graft copolymer which was composed of EPDM backbone and polyisoprene as side chains. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) was first grafted to the EPDM backbone in the presence of peroxides to afford EPDM based macroinitiator. A “grafting-from” polymerization of isoprene in the presence of the EPDM macroinitiator afforded EPDM-graft-polyisoprene copolymers. NR/EPDM co-vulcanization was attempted with the EPDM-graft-polyisoprene as a compatibilizer and its properties were investigated for rubber applications.
