Due to the intrinsic nature of nano-scale materials, they have gained great attention in the field of biomedical science. Specifically, significant efforts have been gone to develop phospholipid-based drug delivery systems. However, long term stability of liposome-based systems has always been issued. Herein we describe the preparation and application of functionalized catanionic vesicles as an alternative to conventional liposomes. Catanionic surfactant vesicles formed spontaneously from a mixture of cationic and anionic surfactants in water. The surface charge of the vesicle could be controlled by choice of surfactants, and the external leaflet of the vesicle could be decorated with non-ionic surfactants. Vesicles incorporated with a mixture of immunogenic peptide and lipooligosaccharide derived from N. gonorrhoeae were capable of inducing a strong IgG response in mice. The preparation, characterization, and biomedical evaluation of this approach will be presented. |
