Understanding of Gold Catalysts via Model Systems |

Bulk gold was generally thought to be an inert metal, whereas small gold particles supported on metal oxide revealed unusual catalytic activity for several oxidation reactions. In order to understand the underlying reason for the enhanced reactivity of these small Au particles we studied the interaction of oxygen with an extended gold surface (Au(111) single crystal) since oxygen adsorption and dissociation is the key step of catalytic oxidation reaction. We found that dissociation of molecular oxygen is promoted by the release of gold atoms from the gold surface. |
