Monodispersed cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets consisting of a reactive nematic mesogen mixture and a non-reactive chiral dopant are successfully produced in a microfluidic channel with reactive CLC. The CLC droplets are then UV-cured and the chiral dopant is extracted, resulting in a cross-linked structure and a complete solid-state droplet without a dopant, respectively. The cross-linked solid-state CLC droplet exhibits a colored reflection spot at the center, with cross-communication dots. The pitch of the well-defined helical photonic structure depends on the solvent quality, temperature, and humidity, giving rise to the reversible change of the reflection color of the CLC droplet under external stimuli. This smart solid-state molecular-spring photonic droplet eliminates the obstacles to CLC-droplet application generated by the fluidic LC state and thus introduces a new avenue for CLC applications. |
