Novel Approach to Disperse Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes |

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) currently attract scientific and technological attention because of their salient properties and emerging applications in nanoelectronics and for nanocomposites. However, a major drawback of their utilization is their poor solubility and low dispersability in aqueous and organic liquids. Current approaches to disperse and exfoliate bundled SWNT into individual tubes include covalent modifications and the use of surfactants. Significant efforts were invested in the development of noncovalent dispersing methods. Here we present a new method for dispersing individual SWNT in aqueous liquids using polylysine in conjunction with high speed vibration milling. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy indicate that the SWNT do not bundle upon drying and may be redispersed in the solvent. The dispersing approach presented here is expected to be useful in the preparation of polymer-SWNT composites. |
