Interlaminar fracture toughness and flexural strength of CFRPs with rubber-filled epoxy matrix |

The bond between a fiber and the matrix is very important for the mechanical behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP). A study has been made on the interlaminar fracture of fabric carbon fiber and epoxy composites. The interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric reinforced epoxy composites was tested under mode I loading using double cantilever beam tests. The flexural strength of CFRP was done with three point bending method. Modified beam theory(MBT) method, compliance calibration(CC) method and modified compliance calibration(MCC) method were used to calculate the interlaminar fracture toughness. An artificial interlaminar edge crack was forced to propagate under separation mode. It was found that elastomeric toughening agents-(liquid rubber) to the epoxy matrix could improve the interlaminar fracture toughness and flexural property significantly. |
