Synthesis of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-styrene) Core-Shell Microgels and Their Thermo-responsive Properties |

Core-shell type microgels of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-styrene)s composed of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) as a thermo-responsive outer shell and polystyrene as a hydrophobic inner core were synthesized via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinking agent and water as a polymerization media at 70℃. The effects of composition on the size and regularity of the microgel beads and on the critical gel transition temperature (CGTT) of the aqueous solution were investigated. As polystyrene content increased, the surface of the copolymer microgel beads became more uniform and smooth while the particle size and swelling ratio of the copolymer microgels decreased. The copolymer microgels showed CGTT at around 33℃ in water, which shifted to lower temperature with increasing polystyrene content. |
