This work was performed to improve the flame retardant property of epoxy composites using ammonium polyphosphate (APP). But, APP could be easily migrated the surface of material by weak compatibility with epoxy resin. Therefore, amine modification was proceeded in order to prevent the migration using 4,4,'-diaminodiphenylmethane, which was used as both curing agent and charring agent. In this study, we observed significant improvement of flame retardant properties by cone calorimeter and limited oxygen index tests. Moreover, the carbonaceous char structure of amine-modified APP/epoxy was more compact than not modified APP/epoxy composite. Finally, we also showed the correlation with flame retardant property and char structures using theory of rubber elasticity.
