Isobutene polymer (polyisobutene, PIB) is a high value-added product used for various purposes such as lubricants, engine additives, adhesives, sealants, and even gum. Therefore, some of the petrochemical companies already operate PIB commercial plants. However, in the future, the competition is expected to be intensified as the consumption decrease by the use of internal combustion engines decreases in line with worldwide carbon regulation, and therefore it is needed reaction model for process optimization and energy reduction. The PIB reaction model is required to design tailored each process, due to the characteristics of cationic polymerization that are different from general radical polymerization and heavily dependent on the reaction system such as the type of solvent, initiator, or Lewis base catalyst. This research shows PIB reaction models that are applied to the key mechanisms of cationic polymerization in stage and verifies prediction conversion, the average molecular weight, and polydispersity index (PDI). This model is expected to be utilized for optimal control for process and prediction of reaction conditions for new product production. |
