Michael-addition type step-growth polymerization is an attractive topic in polymer science because it does not involve any metal catalyst, protection-deprotection steps, nor potentially toxic byproducts, thereby environmentally favorable. Here, attempts to conduct the step-growth addition polymerization of diacrylate and nucleophilic nitro-organic monomers via Michael-type addition reaction are proposed. In the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as a catalyst, we could polymerize 1,4-butanediol diacrylate and nitro-organic compounds with high conversions. The resulting polymers were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The extremely mild polymerization conditions could lead to generate A(AB)nB type polymers with high molecular weight and various polymer structures simply by varying the structures of mono- and dinitro-organic monomers. |
